From June 2011 through July 2012 I traveled a circuitous route by bicycle (with occasional help from a train or automobile) from Vancouver, BC, to Collegeville, MN, visiting intentional communities and conducting interviews with communitarians and others involved in the intentional communities movement. I focused especially on the interface between new monasticism/new friars communities and the classic Christian monastic tradition, with the occasional eco-village and Buddhist community thrown in for good measure.
