Thanks, Julian, for your insightful and balanced observations. We need 'bridge' people between the new monasticism communities and the traditional monastic communities, and you and Lisa and many others offer this important ministry. And traditional monasticism wants to be not closed in upon itself, but open to the new ferment, with warm hospitality and communications.

How very appropriate, Julian. The desert fathers and mothers regularly lived among the tombs! :-)
On quite another topic, the M.I.D. (Monastic Interreligious Dialogue) Board is currently meeting here at the Hermitage for three days, about 15 monks, nuns, sisters, from all over the U.S., all dedicated to the dialogue and sharing with monks, nuns, sisters of other great religions. Our Cyprian is on the Board. Fr. Bede Griffiths remains a key point of reference. A wonderful experience.

The Community of St. Mary (Southern Province), an order of women in the Episcopal Church located in Sewanee, TN, has been experimenting with something that sounds like your concentric circles. Currently there are 10 sisters in full vows (7 live and work at the motherhouse; 1 lives and works in the Philippines, 1 lives and works in the NYC area, and 1 is in a nursing home with Alzheimer's disease) and 1 postulant. They have 10-12 oblates and a large community of associates and beyond that an even larger community of friends. From time to time, oblates have felt called to live close to the community and share in more of the common life (2 are currently doing so, sharing a house owned by the sisters near to the main convent). Associates and friends gather at the convent frequently for liturgies and also for meals and various ministry and work. Right now the sisters are building up their garden into a small farm, and starting next September will be assigned volunteer workers each year from the Episcopal Service Corps, and organization that gives young adults an opportunity to spend a year or two in service to the church and the world. The sisters continue to explore how to let their community of women under vows be the center of something larger so that ripples will go out into the world. They also are excited about the ways in which they can provide opportunities for connection and formation for those who do not feel called to take permanent vows but still desire the best of monastic formation and stability. Beyond the women under vows in the convent, these other circles are open to all, regardless of gender or denominational affiliation.

Julian thank you. This comes close to articulating the entire struggle I have been wrestling with for some time here in my own little Benedictine-practice-spilled-over-into-worldly-social-and-economic structured life. I recognize the whole project as a desert. There is not much bread-of-life to eat. The Benedictine practice is manna. It keeps me from starving. But let's be clear that the structure is still a desert. You have clearly articulated my own challenge with seeing and moving beyond the entrenched social, community, and economic pattern of my life and of those around me.

It doesn't need to be this way. The promise of a better way is there. You are correct that entering the better way is a tremendous leap when you have never seen it and have only a fuzzy idea what it looks like. The personal skills and habits to live this way are rudimentary, and few structures exist for deepening the channel where that river could flow. Truly the new monastic movement is pioneering in the wilderness. No wonder the Israelites took 40 years to reach the promised land.

And then again, Benedict pioneered a new way of living out of a social and spiritual desert 1500 years ago. St Francis and St Teresa and the great saints of the active orders have renewed structures and practices of the life of prayer, community, and service. I'm thrilled to experience your account from the outposts of a this renewal in our time. You are giving me a few more clues to follow and doors to knock on

This debate is as old as the church; in fact it's as old as human society per se. What we ought to be able to hope for in the church, however, is that the debate between the two sides-- whether framed as the authorities v. the people or the institution v. the movement-- be carried out openly, respectfully and vigorously. Those with a taste for monasticism know that our speech ought to be rooted in interior silence but it is nonetheless important to speak if we feel that the truth we see can be helpful. Perhaps the greatest sadness of the way this tension is lived out in some areas of Catholic life today is that it is left unspoken, which, over time, erodes community life. It has this effect because conversation is precisely what holds communities together at the human level.

As someone who explored a traditional monastic vocation as a young(er!) person in the 1980s, one of the things I find most encouraging about the new monastic movement is that it is appears to be so creative. And it seems to me that creativity is often the way forward in the tensions between the two sides we are discussing here. It is hard to argue against creativity because it so often proves itself in fruitfulness. Would St. Paul have succeeded in his arguments with Peter and James leading up to the Council of Jerusalem without the fruit of the churches he had planted? Would his towering theological creativity have gained the currency it achieved over time without those same churches?

A contemporary case in point can be seen in the fact that Evangelical Christianity is the fastest growing religion of conversion (as opposed to growth through natural increase) in the world. This is so, in part at least, because it is so de-centralized and thus can respond so quickly and creatively to needs on the ground. I greatly admire the evangelicals for this and feel it speaks volumes to the wider church.

Much the same point is made, in a very different context, where Charles Taylor allows his own voice to come through on the needs of contemporary Catholicism in a few passages of his masterful book, A Secular Age. Taylor notes that what the Catholic church needs in our "age of authenticity", where mobilization based on cultural-- or even religious-- traditions rings increasingly hollow, is new forms of life. These new forms don't necessarily need to replace or even decry older forms of Catholic life but they do need to be allowed to exist and, better still, encouraged.

Has the Vatican's own enthusiasm for a new evangelism understood Taylor's point or the compelling evidence of the store-front evangelicals in the slums of the global south and the slums of Philadelphia?

There are some tentative signs suggesting that it has: but only time will show.
